Why Play at Small Poker Sites?

When you're choosing which poker site to play at, you must consider if you wish to play at one of the more significant sites like PokerHost or a smaller poker site such as BetOnline.

Each style of poker site has their plus and minuses, but we prefer to play at the smaller poker sites. But why play at smaller sites? Read on.

Knowing Your Opponents

Do you do well at your local home game? That is probably because you see how the players play and act. At the smaller poker sites apparently, there is a lower player base. With that said, if you play higher stakes or more obscure games or tournament types, chances are you will run into the same players very often. We play a lot of head's up, and at the smaller sites we can recognize the player's name and know we have played them before. Just like our home games.

Using the software's "Notes" feature, we can add little things we notice about a particular player, such as the player "folds if you re-raise him," or if he "comes over the top he has it." At worse, we can rate the player as aggressive or tight. This can be invaluable information knowing what type of player you are playing with straight away. At the more significant sites (unless you pay $1000 tourney's or $50/$100 blinds) it's rare you will run into the same player that often - reason #1 we like smaller poker sites.

We always assume our competition is doing the same thing we are, and if we have notes on a player, we presume he has notes on us (in reality this is probably true maybe 50% of the time - players just don't use notes - especially the casual player). So if we notice we have records on a player, we assume he does on us as well.

Since this player has notes on us, we must switch up our play. He may have us labeled as "loose" and try to bully us around. Or if he has us rated as "tight" we may never get a good pot out of him. As a result, we must switch up our play from how we played him last time. But how do we know how we played him?

The notes feature can be valuable for information on yourself as well. We always play aggressive, so if we have no notes on the player, we assume we haven't played him and stick to our regular style of play. During the game, however, we will add a note to him yet so small, that way we know when he comes up again we played him aggressively.

When he plays him the second time, we will note a number 2 in the notes feature, so when he comes around again, we know we have now played him twice aggressively. The third time a number 3 and so on. At some point, when we feel he may know our aggressive play we will switch over and play tighter and trap him for some beautiful pots.

First impressions are the biggest, so when we do switch our play, we will make a note on his profile saying "us tight" so we know we played him tight the last game. Chances are he still views us as aggressive, and we will play tight again, this time noting "us tight 2", meaning its the second time we played him tight.

At some point we will go back to aggressive play starting the notation process all over again - "us aggressive 1" and so on. Get it? At some point, this poor guy is going to have no idea how to play us, and we will have our way with him, plus we have our notes on him knowing how he plays.

You can use the number notation on him as well, so you can track whether he is switching up his style of play.

By using the above system, you can beat a significant advantage over your competition. You have information and information is vital!

This system would never work at the large poker sites because you would never run into the same players enough to make it worthwhile. At some of the medium-sized sites if you play long enough it can work, but it could take months even to get a decent player notes base started.

A History of Online Poker and How It Began

Poker first became available online towards the mid-1990s, and since its inception, it has had a colorful history. Before there was poker as we know it today, there was a time when IRC Poker ruled the virtual world. This was a game that was played through a chat client and similar to chess, players had to key in their moves and then leave the program to perform the actions for them.

Players weren't sat around animated tables like they are today and there were no in-play features. This was at a time when poker was in its most primitive form. It was still just as popular as it is today though and it soon became apparent how many people enjoyed the game and desired to play it online, but there were still very few portals to play at.

Online poker was born in 1998, and even some of the oldest companies are still around today such as PokerStars, but many of them have resigned themselves to the history books for various reasons.

The types of poker varieties that players can expect to find online today include Texas Hold'em (limit and no limit), Omaha (limit and no limit), Razz, 5 Card Stud and 7 Card Stud and most of these games can be accessed in either the free play demo mode or in the real cash mode. Various settings and in-play unique features soon found their way into the virtual game, which increased the entertainment value and made players feel more comfortable.

Many of today's licensed software companies that develop poker programs supply both downloadable platforms and non-downloadable instant flash platforms. The amount of traffic that floods today's most trusted poker sites means that you can always find others to play poker against, any time of the day and throughout the year.

It doesn't take very long for a table to fill up with players, even at the lesser known poker sites. Online poker today is designed to appeal to a wide range of players, including both the seasoned pros and the beginners, with a variety of different tables that are suitable for all levels of skill.

Table limits on cash tables start from as little as $0.01/$0.02 (small blind/big blind), and they can range all the way up to as much as $200.00/$400.00, but these High Stakes tables tend to take longer to fill up.

Poker enthusiasts can also now choose to play in different currencies, such as US dollars, UK Pounds, and Euros, plus there are various new helpful filters that are designed to help players locate the most suitable table that has a spare seat in no time at all. If cash tables aren't for you, you can just as quickly enter a frequently held Sit 'n Go tournament, which will begin as soon as the maximum number of entrants has registered, or you could compete against more players with much more significant prize pools in the tourneys known as Scheduled Tournaments.

These will start at a specific time and date, providing the minimum number of players has registered. Scheduled tourneys are otherwise known as Multi-Table Tournaments.

Over the past 14 years, online poker has dramatically changed for the better, regarding security and the actual quality and functionality of the poker software. Today, players can visit one of the hundreds of different secure poker sites and play the game from the comfort of their own home while on their PC or laptop, or more recently, from modern mobile devices.

Can You Read Online Poker Tells?

Played at casinos or home, and in more recent years played online from home, Poker continues to remain one of the most popular gambling games. As all poker players know, specific signs can help you 'read' your opponents while playing poker. Of course, having the ability to read body language can help you decide whether to bet against an enemy or not.

Noticing a player's shaking hands or rapid breathing or perhaps seeing one of the players is holding breath can definitely 'tell' you what cards the opponent is holding in fact. However, these tell only work if you are facing your opponent at a poker table whether at a casino or in some other setting. How will you then be able to spot any tells if you are playing poker online, from your computer?

Although you cannot possibly notice your opponent's shaking hands while playing online, there are still some signs; some tell you can make use of while playing poker online. In these cases, when playing poker on the internet, you need to focus on your opponent's time of reaction as well as the way he is betting. There are plenty of players that will bet when they have no hand at all and refrain from gambling when they have high cards in their hands. You can easily spot these players right from the start and then use this against them when you know you can beat them.

Another great thing about playing poker online is that the particular software the poker site of your choice is using. Will let you know specific stats regarding all other players. You can make use of this information and turn the game to your advantage when you are playing. You can easily see how many tables a particular player is currently betting on, and this will let you know how good he is in fact. You can also notice things like auto raise during a game; if a player has this option activated, he is undoubtedly holding great cards and cannot wait to place a bet.

Another online poker site feature you should keep an eye on is the chatting room. Though you might not spot it or pay any attention to it at first, make sure to check out what the folks at your table are chatting about. Most of the times, when a person is holding good cards, they will start making small talk, and you can spot them and make use of this tale to your advantage.

When playing poker online you should always pay attention to how your opponents play their hands, how much time do they need to place bets when they have good hands, how are they using the auto selections, are they going to wait for the big blind or are impulsive and prefer to bet right away. All these details together with the chatting that goes on during a game can certainly help you better assess your opponents and take advantage of these tells.

Calling and Limping in No-Limit Texas Hold'Em

In this article, the focus is on the individual cases when the call is reasonable.

Small pairs and suited connectors. These hands play well if the players at the table have deep stacks and many of them have entered the pot. Small pairs and suited connectors will not hit the flop very often but when they do run you can win a large bowl. You can crack aces and kings with such hands because your opponents will not put you on trips or straights easily. I still advise you not to play suited connectors too often because many times you will lose a little money and even if you hit your hand, there is no guarantee that other players will pay you out. The few times you run you have to compensate for your losses for all the different seasons. The massive advantage of small pairs and suited connectors is that it is relatively easy to fold these hands on the flop when they do not hit.

Keep weak players in play (sometimes intending to reraise). This is quite logical. If you bet/raise with strong hands maybe you scare away many players. If you are sure that someone will build, just go ahead and make the call. When it is your turn again, you can decide to make a trap play and only call or make a reraise. Calling is high when there are just 1-2 opponents in hand. If there are more callers, then I advise you to make a 3bet. Calling against many opponents is too dangerous because someone might hit the flop and you can lose a huge pot. It is better to make a squeeze play and reduce the number of players.

Defending your blind. You have to give up your blinds often enough, but with high hands, you can make a call. If you only call, your opponents will take it as a sign of weakness, and they will not put you on a monster hand. You can take advantage of that later in hand and keep your bets/raises for the turn or river.

Limping/calling with marginal hands on a loose table. If the other players are too free, then it is harder to make a good bluff. This means you will have a tough time making your opponents lay down their hands. In such cases, it makes sense to call/limp with marginal hands like KQ suited or AT unsuited in middle position. You should probably not 3bet with intermediate pairs if you know that some players will call you anyway.

I hope these tips help you to make decisions in your pre-flop game.

The Importance Of Value And Continuation Bet In Online Poker

Value and continuation bet are two of the most common terms in poker, and they have an essential role in your poker strategy, too.

Let's see the most important aspects of value- and continuation bet.

Value bet (vb) occurs when you have a high pocket pair or two top cards, and on the flop, your hand seems to be the best. In this case, you make a bet (most of the times) for value, and you suppose your opponent has a weaker hand when he makes the call. The size of the vb is usually between half and two-thirds of the pot. If your opponent is a loose player, then your bet can even be the size of the full cup. The size of your continuation bet does not matter (half the pot, two-thirds or larger) but you have to vary the size of your bet time to time because if you always bet the same amount your opponents will have a comfortable read on you.

Continuation bet (c-bet) is different from value bet because some actions have to happen to get the chance at all for a continuation bet. For a c-bet to occur there has to be a preflop raiser, and only this person can make a bet on the flop. If another player makes a chance on the flop and not the preflop raiser, then it can be a vb, bluff, etc. but not a c-bet.

You have to see the difference between continuation and value bet. With vb, you did not have to lead out before the flop. With continuation bet, you continue the action you started in the first round. And while a value bet happens when you have most likely the best hand, a continuation bet does not say anything about the value of your hand. Your c-bet might be a complete bluff, a semi-bluff or it is the best hand. Also, when you make a vb, you hope to get called. It is different with a continuation bet because in this case, you are happy to take the pot right away.

One more issue with c-bet. It had a different message for players at the tables some years ago. Before the online poker boom, c-bet was a straightforward way of making money. Most players just folded to the bet of the preflop aggressor on the flop. If you made a continuation bet, your opponent only made the call if he hit the flop. In the last years as poker players improved their skills, c-bet lost a lot of its value. Players do not give much respect anymore to the preflop aggressor, and there are a lot of check-raises on the flop against c-bets. For this reason, you should not make a c-bet on every flop because your opponents will learn your patterns and you will face many check-raises.
